Both support various options to find disk usage and show disk usage in different ways.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the syntax of du and df commands<\/p>\n<pre>du [options] [locations\/devices]\n<\/pre>\n<pre>df [options] [locations\/devices]\n<\/pre>\n<p>We will look at different ways to use <em>du<\/em> and <em>df<\/em> commands<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Check_Disk_Space_from_terminal\"><\/span>How to Check Disk Space from terminal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to check disk usage from terminal.<\/p>\n<pre>$ du\n<\/pre>\n<p>The above command will list space occupied by all files &amp; folders in your present working directory (pwd). Since there can be many files &amp; directories in a file system, we pass the output of <em>du<\/em> command to <em>head<\/em> command and select only the first 10 results. You can change it as per your requirements<\/p>\n<pre>$ du | head -n 10\n<\/pre>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a sample output<\/p>\n<pre>ubuntu@ip-172-30-0-194:~$ du | head -n 10\n4       .\/.qws\/share\/data\/Ofi Labs\/PhantomJS\n8       .\/.qws\/share\/data\/Ofi Labs\n12      .\/.qws\/share\/data\n16      .\/.qws\/share\n20      .\/.qws\n4       .\/.gnupg\/private-keys-v1.d\n8       .\/.gnupg\n52      .\/conf\/.git\/hooks\n8       .\/conf\/.git\/info\n4       .\/conf\/.git\/branches\n<\/pre>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t want Linux\/Unix to display disk usage of subfolders and files in folders, then you can use <em>max-depth<\/em> option. The following command will give disk usage of only files and folders located at your current directory.\u00a0 It will not recursively calculate disk usage of all subfolders and files in folders.<\/p>\n<pre>$ du --max-depth=1\n<\/pre>\n<p>Here&#8217;s sample output<\/p>\n<pre>ubuntu@ip-172-30-0-194:~$ du --max-depth=1\n20      .\/.qws\n8       .\/.gnupg\n44704   .\/conf\n125548  .\/fedingo\n9592    .\/.cache\n8       .\/.vim\n8       .\/.ssh\n49176   .\/.local\n259896  .\n<\/pre>\n<p>The above command lists all files &amp; folders in your present working directory along with their size in bytes.<\/p>\n<p>You can get more details about <em>du<\/em> command using<\/p>\n<pre>$ man du\n<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_get_disk_usage_for_specific_folder_directory\"><\/span>How to get disk usage for specific folder \/ directory<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the linux command to get disk usage for specific directory \/ folder<\/p>\n<p>$ du \/path\/to\/dir<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example of <em>du<\/em> command for specific folder (e.g \/etc\/)<\/p>\n<p>$ du \/etc\/<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_get_disk_usage_in_GB_and_MB\"><\/span>How to get disk usage in GB and MB<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You can use the following command to get disk usage in human readable format (Mb and Gb)<\/p>\n<p>$ du -h<\/p>\n<pre>ubuntu@ip-172-30-0-194:~$ du -h --max-depth=1\n20K     .\/.qws\n8.0K    .\/.gnupg\n44M     .\/conf\n123M    .\/fedingo\n9.4M    .\/.cache\n8.0K    .\/.vim\n8.0K    .\/.ssh\n49M     .\/.local\n255M    .\n<\/pre>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_get_disk_usage_by_folder_directory\"><\/span>How to get disk usage by folder \/ directory<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You can get disk space in linux for all files and directories using -a option. We will use its output to get disk usage by directory \/ folder.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the command to get top 5 biggest subfolders on your disk<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo du -a | sort -n -r | head -n 5\n<\/pre>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the command to get top 5 biggest subfolders in a specific folder\/directory<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo du -a <strong>\/path\/to\/dir<\/strong> | sort -n -r | head -n 5\n<\/pre>\n<p>We will use the above command to get top 5 biggest folders in <em>\/etc<\/em> folder<\/p>\n<pre>$ sudo du -a \/etc\/ | sort -n -r | head -n 5\n7432    \/etc\/\n1076    \/etc\/apparmor.d\n684     \/etc\/apache2\n640     \/etc\/ssl\n616     \/etc\/ssl\/certs\n\n<\/pre>\n<p>In the above command we get the disk usage of all files and folders at <em>\/etc<\/em> using <em>du -a<\/em> command. We sort this output using sort command in descending order of bytes. Finally, we select only top 5 records.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, you can use <em>df<\/em> command to get disk space in linux for a user across various disks where the user has read access.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the command to check disk space using <em>df<\/em> command, and get disk usage in human readable format (Mb and Gb)<\/p>\n<pre>$ df -h\nFilesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on\nudev            476M     0  476M   0% \/dev\ntmpfs            98M  784K   98M   1% \/run\n\/dev\/xvda1      7.7G  4.7G  3.1G  61% \/\ntmpfs           490M     0  490M   0% \/dev\/shm\ntmpfs           5.0M     0  5.0M   0% \/run\/lock\ntmpfs           490M     0  490M   0% \/sys\/fs\/cgroup\n\/dev\/loop0       18M   18M     0 100% \/snap\/amazon-ssm-agent\/1566\n\/dev\/loop3       29M   29M     0 100% \/snap\/amazon-ssm-agent\/2012\n\/dev\/loop4       97M   97M     0 100% \/snap\/core\/9665\n\/dev\/loop2       97M   97M     0 100% \/snap\/core\/9804\ntmpfs            98M     0   98M   0% \/run\/user\/1000\n<\/pre>\n<p>The above command lists all file systems the user has access to, one per row. The first row of output contains column names such as filesystem, total disk space, disk space used, disk space available, percentage disk space used, and location of mount.
