It also provides loads of beautifully designed free email templates that you can use for your email marketing campaigns. Let’s quickly look at how to use MailChimp to send emails.
How to Use MailChimp to Send Emails
If you haven’t done it already, please sign up for a MailChimp account, and log into it. Don’t worry, MailChimp provides an awesome free plan to manage up to 2000 subscribers. So you don’t have to pay anything on sign up.
1. Create a subscriber list
After you login, the first step is to create a list on MailChimp. A list is basically a collection of subscribers that you use to send your email blasts. You can have multiple lists in your MailChimp accounts for different types of email marketing campaigns. For example, you can have a list of customers, and another list of prospects.
To create a MailChimp list, navigate to the top of your Lists page and click Create List.
You’ll see a form where you need to fill in details about your list. You need to name the list in order to quickly identify and select it while creating email marketing campaigns. You also need to provide the default from name & email for your list. This is the from name & email the subscribers in your list will see when they receive your email.
You need to provide a mailing address (preferably your business P.O address) for your list, as it’s a legal requirement. This address will be displayed at the bottom of your email, alongside the Unsubscribe button. Finally, you need to also mention a couple of lines about how you received this email address. This also helps in reminding your email recipients how they got onto your mailing list.
Click Save to save your list.
2. Design Sign up Form
Once you’ve saved your list, you’ll see your list’s dashboard. This is like a control panel for your list where you can view & manager the subscribers on your list, see email campaign statistics for your list, create new marketing campaigns, design sign up forms, and do a lot more. If you’ve already created a bunch of lists in your MailChimp account, you can simply select the list you want to edit, from the Lists page, to see its dashboard.
Now, click Sign up Forms and then click General Forms. You’ll see a page that allows you to configure your MailChimp Sign up form.
You can scroll down and customize your form using MailChimp’s amazing drag and drop form builder that allows you to completely customize the color, font and even images, without writing any line of code. You can even add more fields (like first name, last name, etc) to your sign up forms, or remove them, with just a few clicks.
You can click Design It to customize the look and feel of your sign up form, or even add a header image on top.
After you’re done, ensure that you copy the URL of your MailChimp sign up form. You can share this link to your form on social media and via emails to enable people to directly sign up from your list.
3. Create Your Welcome Email
Next you need to create a welcome email that MailChimp will send your new subscriber when they submit your sign up form. To do that, go to the Lists page. Click the list you want to configure your welcome email for. Then click Signup forms and then General Forms as before. This time, select Final Welcome Email from the dropdown for Forms and response emails, as shown below. Also check the option for Send a final Welcome Email
Now you can scroll down and customize the content and design of your welcome email. Click Save, when you’re done.

4. Change Your Mail Address
As mentioned earlier, you’re legally required to add your physical mailing address to your MailChimp emails. To edit your address, click your profile image/name at the top right corner of your screen. You’ll see a dropdown menu. Click Settings and then Contact Information. You’ll see a form where you can add/edit your mailing list to be displayed in your email campaigns.
5. Create a Newsletter Email Campaign
Once you’ve created your subscriber list, you can use it to create your newsletter email campaign. Click Campaigns on the top navigation bar. This will open a page which shows you all the campaigns you’ve created so far in your MailChimp Account.
Click Create Campaign button on top right section of your page. You’ll see a page where you can configure and customize your email marketing campaign.
First of all, you need to select the campaign type. MailChimp allows you to create a variety of campaigns for different types of email marketing campaigns. For now, select Regular Campaign, since it’s basically a simple newsletter campaign where you send an email to your list. You also need to select the list to whom you’ll send your email, and click Next.
On the next page, you need to add a name to your campaign so you can easily monitor its performance, and add an interesting email subject line to increase email open rates. You’ll also see a host of other settings, that you can ignore for now.
Now comes the most interesting part, designing your newsletter.
MailChimp provides an awesome drag and drop email editor that allows you to easily create and customize your emails. It also provides tons of professionally designed email templates that only make your job easier.
First of all, select an email template for your newsletter, based on what kind of content you want to show in your newsletter. For example, if you want to add links to latest blog posts, you may want to select a MailChimp template that allows you to show blog post thumbnails, titles and post descriptions.
Once you select a MailChimp template, it is displayed on the left side of your screen. A template is only a general layout for your email, that you can customize according to your requirements. MailChimp templates have placeholders for adding logos, header images, headings, and more, that you can customize to create your own email template.
On the right, you’ll see a ready made library of elements (such as buttons, social links, videos, images and more) under the Content tab, that you can simply drag & drop on to your newsletter. You can also click the Design tab, to customize the color and font of your email template elements such as Header, Body, Footer, etc.
Once you’re done designing your email template, click Save As Template on top right corner. This will allow you to quickly select & customize this template for future email marketing campaigns, instead of starting from scratch every time.

Once you’ve created your newsletter email, click next to see a preview of your email. Verify that everything is as you want it to be.
