Backlinks used to be the old school way to spread the word about your blog or website. People used
them to send traffic to their personal blogs, while businesses used them to get the word out about their
products. They used various online backlink analyzer tools to find the best places to leave the links.
In order for people to get traffic and improve their SEO rankings, they needed backlinks. This eventually
fell out of favor once Google started the process of constantly overhauling their algorithms. Now there
are many other ways to end up at the top of search engine lists, and backlinks have fallen by the
wayside. They haven’t disappeared, however, are still important. Here are some reasons why.
1. They get your name out there
You obviously don’t want to use any spammy methods of spreading your company’s name all over the
web, but backlinks do actually get your name out there. You can use any of the free or paid link research
tools to find the places to leave backlinks, and people will actually click on them if they’re interested.

2. People do genuinely want to know more
If you’re selling something interesting, whether it’s a service or a product, people do tend to be
genuinely interested. A well-placed backlink to something information – not something that outright yells “sales” will get you more hits from curious people. And those curious people might actually
become customers or sign up for your emailing list.
People aren’t bored with all of the options out there. They aren’t robots. People are naturally intrigued
by something that they might want to buy or something that may help them. Backlinks can definitely
help them find you. Plus, if you’re interlinking to articles on your own website (just like how Wikipedia
does), your readers will click on them to find out more about what you’re writing.
3. Content still matters
While you do want to leave backlinks, you need to ensure that the content that you’re linking to is informational and not spam-like. The days of being able to throw any old content up on the web and gain traffic are over. You need to be careful.
Your content needs to be well written, informative, and not contain a vast number of keywords. (This is called keyword stuffing, and some search engines frown on it.) If your content is written in a natural manner, then feel free to backlink to it. If you’re leaving a link on a message board, make sure that the link goes to a page that relates to that comment or question – not your general homepage.
As long as the links go to quality sites, then they will help your SEO. You don’t want to backlink to anything that degrades your quality. This won’t help you at all. Make sure to have a robust content marketing strategy.
4. Healthy backlinks matter
What do we mean by healthy backlinks? They are ones that are used sparingly. They relate to whatever is being discussed. They aren’t spread all over the web. Non-healthy backlinks are considered spam, and they will hurt your search engine rankings.
If you’ve made these mistakes in the past, see if you can get the links removed. Some companies (and you might be one them) paid for blog links. There used to be companies that would pay a blogger $5 or $10 to write up a post that used a certain number of backlinks to a site. This was an unhealthy way of doing things. If you’re guilty of this, you’ll need to contact those bloggers to have those links removed. These unhealthy backlinks may be dragging your score down. Stick to healthy ones in the future.
5. Use a Backlink Analysis Program
These tools or programs contain information about where to leave links, as well as how many links, which of your links receive clicks, and which keyword strands to link to. Of course, you should use as many natural keywords as possible, since the more unnatural they sound, the less likely it is that people will click on them.
And it’s all about the clicks! You want to draw in traffic, not repel it. The algorithms used by various search engines will also overlook these unnatural sounding strings. Using a program can help you avoid this, and it will allow you to develop a plan to get better backlinks out there in the future. You need to really know what you’re doing in order for your backlinks to be successful.
6. Your content uses headings
Studies on SEO content have shown that if your content – blog or otherwise – is broken down by H1 and H2 headings, that it will bring in better results. These pages are not only easier to read, thanks to the headings and shorter paragraphs, but they are attractive to people who click on your backlinks.
Use a series of link research tools in order to find the best types of content that relate to your website, while at the same time, determine which places you should leave your backlinks. Once your content and your links align, your search engine results will improve. That’s what everyone wants, right?
7. SEO relies on tricky algorithms
Despite all of the changes to various algorithms, SEO still relies on them. Not everyone knows what the updates will be, nor will they be able to fully understand every single fragment of them. Because of this, you do need to use backlinks still. They might come back in favor, and you’ll see your results soar since you already have them in place.
As you can see, SEO backlinks are still useful, as long as you use them properly. If you keep them out of the spam zone, place them in related areas (like blogs and forums) and link back to useful content, you’ll come out ahead.
The days of being able to leave a trail of backlinks all over the web are long over, unfortunately.
